2020 Veterans Breakfast – Honoring Servicemen, Women

The 2020 SCIF Veterans Breakfast Auction and Sweepstakes was a resounding success.

Approximately 400 SCI members attended to show their supporter for our military and enjoy each other’s fellowship around the breakfast table.  At the breakfast, held at the Convention, attendees got a special treat this year as David B. Hooten played Taps on his trumpet and later Michael Peterson gave a moving performance of patriotic songs.

The SCIF Veterans Committee sponsored combat veteran Jonathan Thomas to go on a special designated elk hunt in Montana.  Jonathan, a 15-year veteran and former Staff Sargent, has earned two Purple Heart medals and one Bronze Star V for Valor during his service.  He has been deployed four times, serving two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and two tours in Enduring Freedom.

Jonathan earned a Purple Heart medal for combat injuries sustained in an ambush during his first deployment to Iraq.  He was first wounded by a shot to the chest during his first tour of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004) that broke his ribs. He was injured again when an RPG propelled shrapnel in his thigh.

Jonathan earned his second Purple Heart and Bronze Star V for Valor during his Tour of Duty in Enduring Freedom (2010-2011) for stopping a suicide bomber.  During this incident, Jonathan suffered a traumatic brain injury and lost peripheral vision in his right eye.  Jonathan was also honored with the Meritorious Service Award for years of service and the Order of Saint Maurice Medallion after his last Tour of Duty (2010-2011).  Jonathan is a cancer survivor having battled non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which subsequently ended his military career.

The SCIF Veterans Breakfast included live auction and sweepstakes items where attendees won everything from a fishing trip to Alaska to a long-range 6.5 Creedmoor rifle package. The SCIF Veterans Committee thanks Trijicon for their generous sponsorship of the Veterans Breakfast.  Because of their sponsorship, all veterans attended the breakfast free of charge.

The Committee also thanks all those attending this year for their support and extends an invitation to attend next year’s breakfast where all members are welcome and veterans’ attendance is free.
