Jose Madrazo Named 2019 Weatherby Award Winner

Safari Club International Life Member José Madrazo, “Pepe” as he is known in the hunting world, has been named the 2019 Weatherby Hunting and Conservation Award winner. He was born in Salamanca (Spain), practiced as a Lawyer until retirement and continues to hunt.

For his passion, hunting, there is no retirement. He started hunting at the age of ten, with father, mother and relatives in his family estate in his local region. He began hunting internationally in 1981 and he has not stopped since.  

His passion has always been to hunt in the mountains, started in his native country hunting ibex and chamois and later climbing the mountains of the world to collect 40 different species of sheep, which include 11 different argalis and 39 different species of capra.

In total he has bagged 106 mountain animals, among them 11 subspecies of Marco Polo, all subspecies of ibex, all subspecies of chamois, the two different species of takin, the serow and the goral.

His collection of more than 390 different species of animals is the result of 185 international safaris, visiting 61 countries and more than 190 provinces or States in all five continents.

He has been on nearly 450 hunts for big game and among his achievements counts The Conklin Award, the Culminum Magister Award,  the OVIS Award, The Pantheon Award, the SCI World Hunting Award, the SCI Hunting & Conservation Award, the SCI World Hunting Award Ring, the SCI President’s Award, the Spanish Royal Club of “Monteros” Hunting Personality Award, and he is proud of having been a finalist for the Caldesi Award.

He has actively cooperated with several hunting & conservation institutions like the Conklin Foundation and SCI. For SCI, he has served on projects like establishing four different Chapters in Spain and Portugal; being the coordinator between SCI and the parties in “Antipoaching Project in Cameroon” and serving as Honorary International Director.

He has written widely in hunting and outdoors magazines and published several books: “Ovis Ammon. The Argali Trail” Safari Press 2008, “Safari in China. The Most Elusive Mountain Game”, with Edit. La Trébere 2008, as well as “Primavera oriental”, “Montañas de cinco continentes”, “Carneros Thinhorn de Norteamérica”, “Capra”, and also has written 92 articles on hunting and conservation published in different Spanish hunting magazines.
