Safari Club International encourages all Oregon sportsmen and women to attend the upcoming Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission (OFWC) meeting and support the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s staff recommendation to adopt the proposed draft cougar plan. The OFWC meeting will take place on Friday, Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. at Crook County Fairgrounds, 1280 Main St., Prineville.

The OFWC will give a briefing on the draft cougar management plan (Exhibit C) and consider adopting updates to the plan and administrative rules. Last updated in 2006, the plan guides management of cougars in Oregon.

The draft plan includes information on Oregon cougars, cougar management objectives and cougar management goals incorporated into an adaptive management approach for the future.

The draft updated plan incorporates new scientific literature and Oregon-specific research about cougars, including a genetics and habitat analysis of Oregon’s more than 6,400 cougars. This plan contains a significant amount of information and data on cougar biology, population trends, research findings, damage and conflict, and management activities.

Similar to the 2006 management plan, the draft plan establishes objectives that seek to maintain viable and healthy cougar populations in Oregon, reduce conflicts with cougars, and manage cougars in a manner compatible with other game mammal species.

The plan does not propose major management changes and will continue to direct the OFWC to maintain wildlife at optimum levels and to regulate populations in a manner compatible with the primary uses of land, including hunting. Read the updated draft management plan here.

Sportsmen and women can submit written comments by email to or by mail to Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, 4034 Fairview Industrial Drive SE, Salem, OR 97302.

The meeting will also be livestreamed over ODFW’s Twitter and Periscope (@MyODFW) accounts. You can find the entire OFWC agenda here.
