USFWS Authorizes Lion Imports From Zambia and Zimbabwe

Oct 26, 2017

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has confirmed that it is granting import permits for lions legally harvested in Zambia and Zimbabwe. This, a number of days after SCI issued an email alert to members about the matter.

According to an item the FWS posted on its website, individuals who hunted or will hunt lions from these two countries between Jan. 1, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2018 may apply for import permits.

The FWS previously announced that it was granting permits for wild and wild managed lions from South Africa.

The FWS has yet to make a decision concerning import permits for lions from Namibia, Mozambique and Tanzania.  SCI will continue to monitor the Service’s progress on this decision-making and will update SCI members as soon as there are any new developments.
